Watchmen é uma Graphic Novel dividida em 12 partes, escrita por Alan Moore (também autor de V de Vingança, Constantine e A Liga Extraordinária) e ilustrada por Dave Gibbons. Foi publicada originalmente pela DC Comics, entre 1986 e 1987.
Foi responsável por popularizar o gênero Graphic Novel (uma longa história contada em quadrinhos e divididas em episódios limitados). Watchmen é considerada a melhor história em quadrinhos de todos os tempos, vencedor de vários prêmios Kirby e Eisner, além de uma honraria no Prêmio Hugo, sendo a única Graphic Novel a conseguir tal feito. A revista Time publicou uma lista dos 100 melhores romances escritos desde 1923, e Watchmen é a única história em quadrinhos presente na lista.

A trama se passa nos EUA de 1985. A diferença é que por volta da década de 30, as primeiras histórias em quadrinhos como Super-Homem teriam influenciado algumas pessoas a se fantasiarem e saírem em combate ao crime. Com a ajuda dos heróis, os EUA teriam ganhado a guerra do Vietnam, e o mundo de 1985 seria bem diferente do que nossa realidade. Mas os humanos por trás das fantasias possuem seus problemas psicológicos e éticos, que são retratados com maestria por Allan Moore, que consegue nos mostrar um terrível mundo real por trás dos olhos de quem já viu as mais terríveis coisas. Em 1977 a Lei Keene é aprovada, e os justiceiros são proibidos de agir, acabando com os super-heróis. Apenas o sanguinário Rorschach continua suas vigílias noturnas. A história começa quando um dos ex-heróis, o comediante, é assassinado, e Rorschach investiga sua morte, que o leva a suspeitar de uma conspiração para matar os mascarados. Tentando unir mais uma vez os antigos heróis, Rorschach vai vendo mascarado por mascarado cair por terra, e a terrível Guerra Fria se transformando numa iminente Terceira Guerra Mundial.

Em Março de 2009 chegará aos cinemas o filme Watchmen, e todos poderão ter acesso a uma das melhores histórias já escritas. Para quem gosta de uma boa leitura, vai aí a dica ^^

The story is set in the USA, at 1985. But there is a huge difference: About the 30's, the first super heroes stories, like Superman, would have inspired some people to wear uniforms and go out fighting the crime. With the help of these super heroes, the USA would have won the Vietnam War, and the world of 1985 would be really different from our reality. But the human beyond the uniforms have too their own psychological and ethic problems, which are shown with amazing ability by Allan Moore, who shows us a terrible real world beyond the eyes of the ones who have saw the most terrible things. In 1977, the Keene Act banish the super heroes, making illegal to be a watchmen. Only the bloody Rorschach keep on the hero work. The story begins when one of the ex-heroes, the Comedian, is murdered, and Rorschach investigates his death. His discoveries lead him to think of a conspiracy to kill ex-heroes. Trying to once again bring together the heroes of the past, Rorschach sees hero after hero fall into the ground, and the Cold War becoming a terrible and inevitable World War.
